Welcome to Irish Thoracic Society

Research

The Irish Thoracic Society (ITS) is pleased to announce a call for research projects under the 2012 MRCG/HRB Joint Funding Scheme to the value of €120,000.00 over two years. This call is made possible thanks to the generous support of Allen & Hanburys through an unrestricted research grant.

The Irish Thoracic Society, through its partnership with Allen & Hanburys, has already made a mark on respiratory research in Ireland through the ITS/A&H Research Fellowship in Respiratory Medicine. To date three fellowships have been funded through the scheme, the findings of which have already yielded valuable knowledge in respiratory medicine. Participation in the MRCG/HRB Joint Funding Scheme marks an extension of this partnership by providing an opportunity to fund respiratory research on a broader and more ambitious scale.

Application Guidelines
• All potential applicants must submit a letter of intent, including title, list of investigators and a brief description of the proposed research as well as the names of two international peer reviewers with expertise in your proposed research area by Friday, 2nd March at 17.00.

• The closing date for receipt of completed applications is Friday, 30th March at 17.00.

• The application form and associated documents must be completed in accordance with the agreed requirements of the MRCG/HRB Joint Funding Scheme. Any application which does not meet these criteria will not be considered.

All proposals will be subject to a rigorous peer review process: an external peer review by three international expert peer reviewers followed by evaluation and final selection by the Irish Thoracic Society Research Review Committee.

The application and review process includes a ‘Right To Reply’ stage. Following the International peer review anonymised reviews will be sent back to applicants who will be invited to address in writing any issues raised within a defined timeframe. The highest ranking proposal will be submitted for consideration to the Joint Funding Scheme operated by the Medical Research Charities Group and the Health Research Board. If successful the proposal will be co-funded by the Irish Thoracic Society including an unrestricted research grant provided by Allen & Hanburys.

The Medical Research Charities Group (MRCG) is an umbrella group of 33 charities that seeks to generate a dynamic health research environment in Ireland. The ITS has been a member of the MRCG since 2008. The MRCG/HRB Joint Funding Scheme is a collaboration between member charities and the Health Research Board. This innovative joint funding scheme enables medical charities to support research that they might otherwise not be in a position to finance in full.
